ALaska Writers Guild Guest Speaker

Date Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 7:00pm

Place: Barnes & Noble (cn Benson and C St.)

Speaker of the Month: Professor John Strohmeyer

Topic: The Joys and Tortures of Being Published

Professor Strohmeyer won a Pulitzer traveling fellowship for finishing first in his class, at the Columbia School for Journalism in New York, and a Nieman fellowship from Harvard University while a reporter for the Providence Journal. He has a Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing and in 1983 was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Lehigh University.

In 1984 Professor Strohmeyer won a national competition for an Alicia Patterson fellowship that enabled him to research and write a book about the rise and fall of the nation's steel industry, he also wrote"Historical Anchorage an Illustrated History" of the largest metropolis in Alaska, its changes in character and growth over the last century. Gold exploration, railroad boom and bust, military occupation, air age discovery, oil fever, earthquakes, and finally massive oil wealth all figure into transforming this relatively recent wilderness site into a jewel of a city. Anchorage is celebrating over 300 years of rich history.

Professor Strohmeyer has been listed in Who's Who in America and is profiled in a 1980 edition of Contemporary Authors.

We look forward to seeing you!!!

The Ralph Williams Speculative Fiction Writing Contest was also cancelled by Board action but is being picked up by the Ralph Williams Speculative Fiction Contest, an entity which is not associated with the Guild, although Stephanie Patel continues to chair the contest.  The deadline is being extended for submissions.  The link to the new website for the contest is www.rwcontest.blogspot.com.  You may also contact Stephanie at stpatel@gci.net with any questions.

If you have submitted a manuscript you will also soon receive communication regarding the Contest.  If you haven’t submitted one yet, take heart—there is a new deadline of September 10, 2008, or until a total of 300 entries are received, which ever occurs first. Check out the new website for additional information.
